Day 7: We are open to reasoned debate on Bill Lokpal, says PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday not to the side of his response equal to the Lokpal Act, saying at a function in Calcutta that the Government was open to reasoned debate that even though the crowds grew noisy protest zones in different regions.

With the rapid Anna Hazare to enter their seventh day and counting, the cries of an ombudsman strong legislation has grown louder and louder over the weekend, with Monday - a national holiday - is likely to lose the same way.

In Kolkata, Singh reiterated that there was no "magic wand" to solve corruption, a statement suggesting that the government is far from a comprehensive strategy on the phenomenon of Anna.

Singh said the government was doing everything possible to fight corruption and that would come with "systematically" to stop.

"The government is serious about eliminating corruption. Procedures are needed to eliminate strong," he said.
Reacting to the statement by the Prime Minister, Anna's team said the government must approve the project on 30 Jan Lokpal August.

Kiran Bedi, said: "The bill is very weak. Please understand that ... take five minutes for a bill if it comes to your salary. Get the Jan Lokpal bill passed. There are still five or six days left, "he said.

Meanwhile, the spiritual leader Baiyyuji Maharaj, who has emerged as a mediator, said today that the government was trying "very hard" to find a solution.

Indore-based Maharaj, who is known by several senior politicians of Maharashtra, said that the crux of the dialogue was now to what extent either side was willing to concede.
