Police probe sex scandal at the training school


MUMBAI: The state government has ordered a high-level investigation into the alleged incident of sexual harassment of female police trainees in Police Training School in Kolhapur, who first came to light on 24 April. Following a complaint from the police, Shahupuri police registered a case against drilling inspector Yuvraj Kamble, who has been arrested and suspended from service.

With reports that other officials were also involved in sexual exploitation and that a number of single women police had been tortured, home state minister RR Patil announced on Wednesday that Maithili Jha, Additional Superintendent of Police, Nashik (Rural) , had been appointed to investigate the incident.

Patil said he had received threats.

"The incident on the ground that has been recorded case occurred on 14 January. He approached the police three months later, as she says she was threatened," said Patil. While unconfirmed reports had said earlier that up to 11 police trainees were subjected to sexual abuse in the training center and were "pregnant," Patil said only one had until then no.

Patil added that only two female officers in the center are pregnant .. "One of them is married and has not complained," he said.

Not rule out the involvement of other officials at all, Patil said that Jha's role would involve interaction with other female students policemen "to see if they too were victims, and if they too had been threatened.


According to sources, the training instructor Yuvraj Kamble is believed to be the prime suspect in the case. The 11 victims are said to be pregnant.

Kamble has been arrested, but the involvement of more people has been planned.

Maharashtra, RR Patil, the Home Secretary has ordered an investigation into the incident.

A medical examination confirmed Tuesday that police, most of whom are unmarried, pregnant.
